Brent Tate - A True Sportsman

Thursday, September 04, 2014

I know this has nothing to do with politics, but as a Queenslander who likes his rugby league I thought perhaps it would be nice to mention something totally outside politics for once.

Brent Tate, who has played for the Broncos, Cowboys, Australia and the Queensland State of Origin team, today announced his retirement. This was due to injuries and the advice of his doctors.

Brent would have to be one of the toughest and most loyal players this state has ever produced. I cannot recall him ever bad mouthing an opponent, referee or opposing team. He has taken the good and bad calls in his stride and always been a fine role model to young league fans. He has always acted as a gentleman and played fairly, while never giving an inch. Always a team player.

In this modern era where so much is made of our so-called sporting “heroes”, many of whom often behave appallingly, and are certainly not heroes, I think Brent is a shining exception. He represents all that we should aspire to in sportsmanship and mateship and hard work. Brent returned to football after several injuries which would have retired many less determined players.

Queensland sport will be the biggest loser with Brent’s retirement.  He is a real man, a true credit to himself.
We wish him all the best in whatever he does in the future, I just hope he does it in Queensland.
